pull
Assisted Pull-Up
Works in
gym, calisthenics
Equipment
machine, bands, pullup bar
Primary muscles
lats, mid back, biceps
Why do it
This is how you earn your first pull-up. Whether you use a band or the machine, it lets you train the exact pulling pattern with less than full bodyweight, so you build the strength and groove to eventually pull yourself up unassisted. Reduce the assistance over the weeks. Pull the chest to the bar and squeeze the shoulder blades down.
How to do it
A scaled pull-up using a machine pad or a band looped under the knees or feet to reduce bodyweight load. It builds the strength and groove needed for a full pull-up. Pull until the chin clears the bar, then lower under control.
What the science says
A review of cohort studies covering over a million people found that just 30 to 60 minutes a week of muscle-strengthening work was linked to a 10 to 17 percent lower risk of dying early and of heart disease, cancer and diabetes (Momma et al., 2022, British Journal of Sports Medicine).
Fun fact
The pull-up you are building toward is no small thing: it is a scored event in the US Marine Corps fitness test, where a top male score has long meant around 20 strict dead-hang reps.
